Senoko Energy and Gentari Collaborate on Hydrogen Importation in Singapore

  • Will aim to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 18,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent
  • 20-year supply agreement to begin by 2029

Senoko Energy, one of Singapore’s largest energy companies, announced a partnership with Gentari, a clean energy solutions provider, through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This collaboration aims to explore the feasibility of importing hydrogen gas from Malaysia to Singapore.

The initiative plans to integrate the imported hydrogen into Senoko Energy’s existing and new combined cycle gas turbine assets, enhancing both efficiency and environmental performance. Under a proposed 20-year supply agreement, the hydrogen is expected to begin flowing by 2029.

Senoko Energy aims to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 18,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent (tCO2e) annually in the initial phase of this project. This reduction is comparable to removing around 4,000 cars from the roads. Future phases could potentially increase this reduction to 535,000 tCO2e, equivalent to about 119,000 cars. This effort aligns with Singapore’s national hydrogen strategy and its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Frederik Baerts, President & CEO of Senoko Energy, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership: “Senoko Energy is extremely excited to be embarking on this partnership with Gentari, which represents a significant milestone in our commitment to advancing the energy transition. Hydrogen has the potential to play a critical role in reducing carbon emissions, and so together, we are taking a bold step towards creating a more sustainable energy landscape and low-carbon future.”

Gentari aims to solidify its position as a leading supplier of green molecules in Southeast Asia through this collaboration. Michèle Azalbert, Chief Hydrogen Officer at Gentari, remarked on the significance of cross-border infrastructure: “This partnership with Senoko Energy is a key step in building a hydrogen backbone for Southeast Asia. Cross-border infrastructure like this pipeline connects production and demand centres as we accelerate green hydrogen adoption across the region.”

This partnership is part of Senoko Energy’s broader strategy to support Singapore’s transition to a low-carbon future. Other initiatives include an MoU signed with City Energy in June 2023 focused on hydrogen opportunities and the launch of SolarShare 2.0, Singapore’s first commercially available peer-to-peer grid-scale trading platform for solar energy.

Gentari is also actively developing Malaysia’s hydrogen economy through various initiatives. These include collaborations with Tenaga Nasional Berhad for feasibility studies on green hydrogen and partnerships with Sarawak’s SEDC Energy to establish a hydrogen production hub.
