  • Range of up to 410 kilometers on a single charge.

At the Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS) 2024, Perodua has unveiled its latest electric vehicle (EV) concept, the eMO-II. This model is poised to be the company’s first production EV, targeting a launch in 2025 and aiming to be the most affordable EV in Malaysia.

Design and Features

The eMO-II concept showcases a modern and sporty design that builds on its predecessor, the eMO-I. With a more futuristic aesthetic, the hatchback is expected to appeal to a broad audience, particularly younger drivers looking for an eco-friendly vehicle. The vehicle is equipped with a CATL-sourced lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery with an estimated capacity of 50 kWh, which supports a range of up to 410 kilometers on a single charge.

Performance Specifications

Perodua has set ambitious performance targets for the eMO-II, with a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of approximately 6.7 seconds. This performance metric positions the eMO-II as a competitive option in the growing EV market. Charging capabilities are also noteworthy; a full charge via AC charging takes around eight hours, while DC fast charging can boost the battery from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes.

Production Plans and Pricing

Perodua’s president and CEO, Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad, announced plans to produce 500 units of the eMO-II monthly starting next year. The pricing strategy aims to keep the vehicle affordable, with estimates suggesting a price range between RM50,000 and RM90,000. This pricing strategy is designed to make electric mobility accessible to more Malaysians, particularly as the nation pushes towards greener transportation solutions.

The Malaysian government has expressed support for Perodua’s efforts, with the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry indicating that it will assist in producing Malaysia’s first EV priced under RM100,000. This backing highlights the government’s commitment to fostering local EV production and innovation.

Future Outlook

As Perodua prepares for the launch of the eMO-II in 2025, several features and improvements are still under consideration. The company has indicated that it will continue to refine the prototype based on consumer feedback and technological advancements. Additionally, there are discussions about establishing a network of EV charging stations every 40 to 50 kilometers across Malaysia to support eMO-II owners.

In summary, the unveiling of the eMO-II at KLIMS 2024 marks a significant milestone for Perodua as it ventures into the electric vehicle market. With its focus on affordability, performance, and accessibility, Perodua aims to lead Malaysia’s transition towards sustainable mobility while competing effectively against other local players like Proton, which is set to launch its own EV model soon.
